Connecting to Ancient Ways
firing pottery in a pit of blazing flame is the oldest method known to man…
Blazing flame and magical alchemy react to create a truly one of a kind piece. Firing ceramics in a pit or open flame is the oldest method of firing pottery and dates back to at least 29,000 BCE. This is an ancient technique that connects us back to the elements of the earth in its most raw and elemental form. The pots are buried in a pit in the ground, covered with combustible materials, and set ablaze to harden the clay, creating unique, unglazed pieces. No two will ever be the same much as is the case in nature.
I fell in love with the unpredictable, nature-based results and the process itself, which is an ancient and intimate way to transform clay. The magic comes from the unknown outcome, as smoke, flames, and combustible materials create unique, swirling colors and patterns on the pots. It's a primal experience where nature is a co-creator, and the finished piece is a beautiful surprise that can't be replicated. Holding a piece of nature’s wild and unpredictable artistry is a thrill in and of itself.
